How it works

Apply a percentage discount to a price and see what it comes to. Use it for sales, early-payment discounts, negotiated reductions and any percentage drop in a value.

New value = value × (1 - percentage ÷ 100)

Example: a $250 item with 30% off costs 250 × 0.70 = $175, a saving of $75.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Convert percentage to decimal: 30% ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Subtract from 1 to get the multiplier: 1 - 0.3 = 0.7
  3. Multiply original by the multiplier: 250 × 0.7 = 175

To decrease 250 by 30%, we multiply by (1 - 30/100). This gives us 175, which is 250 minus 30%.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate 30% off?

Multiply the price by 0.70, which is what remains after taking off 30%. For $250: 250 × 0.70 = $175.

Do two 20% discounts add up to 40%?

No. Discounts applied one after another come off the already reduced value: 100 with two 20% discounts becomes 100 × 0.80 × 0.80 = 64, a total discount of 36%, not 40%.

How do I find the price before the discount?
